We have been in business for over 30 years, buying selling and researching antique stock and bond certificates.

The collection of old shares, called scripophily, has been going on since the 1960s.

Here or some definitions that you might see:

ca - approximately, from around the era of.

Cancelled (also spelled canceled) (abbrev: C) - stamped with an ink stamp or hole punched, designating that the certificate has been sold or redeemed.

Certificate (abbrev: cert) - a document representing ownership of a stock or bond.

Coupon - a very small certificate, usually appearing in multiples on a sheet, that represents interest payment on a bond (occasionally, usually on European certificates, dividend payments on a stock) 

CUSIP - the unique number that is assigned to all modern stocks and bonds.

Foxing - Staining and spotting on paper, most likely caused by fungus, humidity, acid in the paper, and/or iron in the paper.

Issued (abbrev: I)- the name of the shareholder is filled out, the certificate is dated, and the number of shares is filled in.

Partially issued (abbrev: PI) - the certificate is partially but not completely filled out. In other words, it may be missing the owner, the date, or the number of shares.

Partially issued and cancelled (abbrev: PIC) - partially filled out and cancelled.

Specimen (abbrev: SP) - Unissued certificate which has the word Specimen either stamped, printed, or hole punched into it. These are genuine certificates which are used by salesmen for the banknote companies to show as examples of their products.

Unissued cancelled (abbrev. UC) - never filled out and cancelled. Occasionally found on leftover unissued certificates of companies.

Toning - slight changing in the color of the paper, either naturally or artificially.

Issued and cancelled - fully filled out and cancelled.

Issued and uncancelled - fully filled out with no cancellation mark.

Uncancelled (also spelled uncanceled) - no cancellation marks of any kind.

Unissued (abbrev: U) - nothing is filled in on the certificate.

Unissued cancelled (abbrev. UC) - never filled out and cancelled. Occasionally found on leftover unissued certificates of companies.

Void (abbrev: V) - stamped with the word Void. Occasionally found on leftover unissued certificates of modern companies.
